Melvin Johnson
Melvin “Bill” Johnson, 72, Webster City, died Thursday afternoon, July 5, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, where he had been a patient for 16 days. He had been in failing health for the past five years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 7, at 11 a.m. at the Foster Funeral Home, Rev. Vernon Sorensen officiating. Visitation at the funeral home is after 6 p.m. tonight until service time. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Graveside flag-folding services will be conducted by American Legion Post 191.
Melvin Thomas Johnson, son of John and Minnie (Martinson) Johnson, was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Webster City where he received his education. He married Helen Witt Phipps on Sept. 18, 1943. The Couple resided in Virginia, Minnesota, and Tennessee, before moving to Webster City in 1949. For 26 years, Mr. Johnson operated Burton and Johnson Construction in Webster City, and he later worked as maintenance supervisor at Nissen & Co. for 12 years.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, Webster City; two daughters and three sons, Darlene (Mrs. Larry) Hubbard, Rock Falls, Ill.; Tom Johnson, Bonham, Texas; Ken Johnson, Azle, Texas; Mike Johnson, Albuquerque, N.M.; and Sue (Mrs. Tom) Embrey, Glendale, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, John M. Johnson, Webster City; two sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Clifton) Wolf, Webster City; and Alice (Mrs. Dwain) Hawkins, Detroit, Mich.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the V.F.W.
