John Mervin ‘Merv’ Johnson was born Apr. 10, 1923 to Alfred Julius and Anna M. Munson Johnson. He died Feb. 15, 2005 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Story City, IA.

Merv served with the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Mataco (AT-86).

John "Merv" Johnson, 81, of Story City, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Cemetery.
John "Merv" Johnson was born April 10, 1923, in Ellsworth, the son of Alfred and Anna (Munson) Johnson. He was in the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Mataco during World War II. On Aug. 30, 1970, he married Phyllis Williams in Ames. He retired in 1987 after 16 years at the Iowa State University Press. He then worked for Story County Conservation at McFarland Park. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Story City, VFW Post 817 in Boone and American Legion Post 59 in Story City. He enjoyed gardening, sharing his produce with everyone. His other favorite activities were fishing, camping, outdoors, flowers and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Johnson of Story City; daughter, Vicky (Larry) Hatcher of Platteville, Colo.; sons, Michael (Keiko) Williams of Cypress, Texas and Steven (Terry) Williams of Mission Viejo, Calif.; grandchildren, John Hatcher, Jason Williams and Maria Williams; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Ernest Johnson of Story City; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Vivian Neeley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
