Vernon Jacobson, 78, Jewell, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday January 25, 2001 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell with Rev. Dale Peterson to officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Friends may call Wednesday after 3 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell where the family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Jewell Fire and Rescue, and Bethesda Lutheran Church.
Vernon Edwin Jacobson was born near Radcliffe on June 29, 1922 to Gaylord Amos and Elida Jerina Twedt Jacobson. He was a 1940 graduate of Ellsworth Community High School. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. On August 3, 1946, he married Beverly Joan Yeager at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Vernon farmed for 27 years and work for Farm Service for over 20 years. He was an active member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell where he served on many committees and held several offices. Vernon was also a member of the Jewell Lions Club, the Jewell Golf and Country Club, and the American Legion.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Joan Jacobson of Jewell, two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Jim Fitzgerald of Aurora, Illinois and Cindy and Nick Fonken of Kamrar, a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Marsha Jacobson of Waukee, six grandchildren, Scott Fitzgerald, Jodi Fitzgerald, Brandon Fonken, Chad Fonken, Amanda Jacobson and Joshua Jacobson, three sisters, Genevieve Kiefer of Dubuque, Shirley Post of Nevada and Joyce Mesch of Hubbard, and a sister-in-law, Betty Jacobson of Mitchellville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Jacobson.
