Pvt. Richard Vanden Brink…left the States August 3 for overseas duty. He landed in Leyte, Philippines on Aug. 30. On September 2 Richard and his buddy from Ohio were going to church and he met Wilbur Huisman from Carmel.

Snafu Snatcher – Corporal Wilbur Huisman has been assigned to the 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron. Huisman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Huisman, Rock Valley, Iowa and is married to Mrs. Tena Huisman. He graduated from the Sioux Center high school and was employed as mechanic. He was inducted into the army in December 1944 at Ft. Snelling, Minn. and departed for overseas duty in May ’45. The 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron is famed as the “Snafu Snatchers” of the 13th Jungle Air Force. The oldest rescue organization in the Air Forces, this Squadron has saved the lives of 648 American and Allied airmen whose planes have been forced down into the open sea.
The “Snafu Snatchers” is the most highly decorated outfit in the Pacific, having flown combat rescue, evacuation and path-finder missions throughout a vast area including New Guinea, Netherlands East Indies, Borneo, Indo-China, Philippines and adjacent waters. Each day Catalina “dumbos” and B-17 “Flying Dutchmen” of Corporal Huisman’s Squadron guard the sea lanes from New Guinea to Okinawa and from Guam to the China Coast. (Excerpt of letter from Sgt. Arnold Kaemingk) There are a few more Sioux Centerites in Manila, Wilbur Huisman and I see each other often. He was over today again. Last Sunday Herman Eppink and Wilbur were both over and we had a good visit. We also went uptown, took pictures, etc.

Wilbur Huisman Returning Home From South Pacific
Sergeant Wilbur Huisman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Huisman, is now returning to the United States for discharge after more than twenty-one months service with the Army Air Force. Sgt. Huisman entered service in December 1944 and trained as an Aviation Cadet before being transferred to the Air Communications Service. Leaving the United States for overseas in May 1945, Sgt. Huisman was assigned to the Air Communications Service Detachments at Leyte and at Laoag in the Philippines. Sgt. Huisman is a graduate of Sioux Center high school in 1943. Before joining the army, he was a mechanic with the Sioux Implement Co.
