Ireton, Iowa – Announcement was received here of the graduation of LeLand F. Hemmingson at Frederick army airfield, Frederick, Oklahoma, as a pilot in the army air force. He graduated as a flight officer. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hemmingson, were former Ireton residents and now make their home at Bremerton, Washington. Leland was graduated from Ireton Public High School as salutatorian of the 1941 class. His brother, Robert, serving with the navy, is now at Bremerton after reassignment to a new ship, following the sinking of the aircraft carrier, the Ommaney Bay, on which he was serving.

Robert Alfred Hemmingson, Sr was born July 20, 1921 to Alfred S. and Louise J. Schmedhans Hemmingson. He died Mar. 4, 1992 and is buried in Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bremerton, WA.

Petty Officer Hemmingson served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ommaney Bay (CVE-79) which was sunk by a kamikaze strike in the waters between Mindanao and Leyte. He survived the sinking and also served aboard the USS Salerno Bay (CVE-110).
