David Wendel Heers, 86, of Jewell, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
David Wendel Heers, son of Guy and Ethel Gilberson Heers, was born on February 16, 1921 at the Heers Farm home in Story City, Iowa. He graduated from Story City High in 1938.
David Enlisted in the U.S. Army Aircorp in November 1941 and was called to active duty in January 1942. David served in the C.B.I. Theater—stationed in Western China attached to the 315th Fighter Control S.Q.D. with Honorable Discharge in November 1945.
On November 23, 1949, David married Althea Mae Hassebrock at Bentonville, Arkansas. They resided in Jewell where David worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Jewell, then in Williams for 28 years. He was a member of the Jewell United Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife Althea; children, Mark Heers of Corona, CA, Mark and Trudy Yates of Austin, TX, Kevin and Rhonda Heers of San Jacinto, CA; grandchildren, Nathan and wife Karina Heers of Riverside, CA, Jennifer Heers of Riverside, CA., Dustin Hanson and fiancé Courtney Williams, both of Tyler, TX, Drew Hanson of Tyler, TX, Devan Hanson of Austin, TX; step-grandchildren, Kyle Miller and Kelley Miller, both of San Jacinto, CA; and his only living brother, Albert Heers of Story City, IA.
David was preceded in death by his parents; a son at birth, Paul David; and brothers, George, Franklin and Edward.
A memorial service was held on Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Jewell United Church of Christ. The Rev. Bob Miller officiated. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.
