James Francis Hanke was born Nov. 14, 1914. He died Sept. 1978 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Webster City, IA.
Cpl. Hanke served with the U.S. Army in World War II with the 11th Armored Division.

James F. Hanke, 63, lifelong resident and Webster City businessman, died suddenly late Monday afternoon at the Brushy Creek Recreational area where he had been gathering bittersweet for fall arrangements.
Funeral services ill be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church with Father Joseph Sullivan officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery. Flag-folding services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 191.
Scripture services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral Home.
James Francis Hanke, son of John and Josephine Haeffliger Hanke, was born Nov. 21, 1914 at Webster City. He was reared and educated in this community. He had always resided in Webster City except for one year when he managed a grocery store in Gowrie and for three years when he served in the U. S. Army during World War II, serving in the European theater. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals while serving in the Belgium war sector.
He was united in marriage May 11, 1941 to Marion Garden, and the couple resided in Webster City. He worked for the Brin Furniture Co. and later the Scoles Tax Service which he later purchased, and had operated the firm as Hanke Tax and Accounting Service since that time.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, William P. Hanke, Webster City, and the Rev. James F. Hanke, Jr. of Dike, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, two brothers, John J. Hanke and Joseph P. Hanke, both of Webster City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters, one of whom died in infancy.
He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church, the American Legion Post 191, of which he had been serving as finance officer for several years. He was also a member of the Hamilton County Red Cross board and had served as treasurer of the board for the past 25 years.
