Four sons of Elmer Tobias and Clara Alice House Hanen served their country in World War II: Louis John, Harold Dwight, Elmer Clare, and Max Laverne.
Max Laverne Hanen was born Apr. 13, 1928. He died Jan. 7, 2002 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.
Max served with the U.S. Navy.

MAX HANEN, 74, Fort Atkinson, Wis., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002 at the Waukesha Memorial Hospital in Waukesha, Wis. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Hall officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Max Laverne Hanen, son of Elmer and Clara House Hanen, was born April 13, 1928 in Boone County. He attended Webster City schools. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge , he moved to Sully and worked for Maytag. This is where he met Alberdena "Berdie" Kuipers Bezemer. They were married March 7, 1954 at Oskaloosa. He attended meat cutters school at Toledo, Ohio. The couple moved to Webster City where he was employed at SunMart with his brother. Max purchased the Rainbow Lounge on April Fools Day in 1958, which he operated for 40 years. Mrs. Hanen died Feb 22, 200l. He moved to Fort Atkinson a year ago.
Mr. Hanen is survived by his brother, Harold Hanen of Webster City; step-son, Carroll "Cal" Bezemer of Los Angeles; step-daughter, Penelope Michler of Burlington, Wis.;grandchildren, Mark & Melinda Kraner of St Cloud, Minn., John Kraner of Madison, Wis., Kristine & Shad Branen of Burlington, Wis.; 3 great-granddaughters; nieces, Cheryl Hanen, Fort Atkinson, Wisl, Donna Muhm of Spirit Lake, and Patricia Schwering of Webster City, and Judy Hanen of Las Vegas, Nev. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Louis, Elmer and Ray Hanen.
He has raised Show King pigeons and belonged to several pigeon clubs; was a board member with the Hamilton County Fair in the late 60's and early 70's; he was active in the Democratic Party in the 70's; Webster City Moose Lodge member., former Webster City Elks Lodge member. He enjoyed reading, playing cards and was an avid story teller.
