Four sons of Elmer Tobias and Clara Alice House Hanen served their country in World War II: Louis John, Harold Dwight, Elmer Clare, and Max Laverne.
Elmer Clare Hanen was born Oct. 19, 1924. He died Jan. 19, 1977.
Elmer served with the U.S. Navy in World War II seeing action in the North Atlantic, Africa and South Pacific areas aboard the USS Melville (AD-2) and the USS Luzon (PG-47).

Elmer Claire (Junior) Hanen, 52, 919 John St., died suddenly early this morning at the Hamilton County hospital, following an apparent heart attack. He had been in ill health for approximately three years.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. Raymond M. Roden officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.
Elmer Claire Hanen, son of Elmer Tobias and Clara Alice House Hanen, was born Oct. 19, 1924 at Gilbert, Iowa. He spent his early life in the Gilbert-Jordan community, later to the Homer-Webster City area, where he was educated.
He served in World War II from Dec. 11, 1941, to December, 1945. He saw action with the Navy in the North Atlantic, Africa and South Pacific area.
In January, 1951, he was united in marriage to Margie Bonner, and he was employed as a meat cutter in the Webster City, Eagle Grove and Fort Dodge communities.
To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Tom (Donna) Bylund of Boone.
On Nov. 28, 1957, he was married to Darlene Knief, and he was employed as a carpenter in Iowa City and later in Webster City.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Tom Bylund and Cheryl Hanen; by two brothers, Harold D. Hanen and Max L. Hanen, both of Webster City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister.
Mr. Hanen was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church.
