Lieut. Lloyd Haefs Reported Killed in Mediterranean Area
First Lieut. Lloyd D. Haefs, bombardier with the United States air corps in engagements over Greece, was one of nine Iowans listed Tuesday by the War Department as killed in action in the Mediterranean area.
Early in January it was announced that Lieut. Haefs, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Haefs, 1825 W. Horne street, had been missing in action since December 20. His wife is Mrs. Mary Haefs, 2707 Dodge avenue.
He was a graduate of Central high school and was active in track events. Through honors received in athletics, he was awarded a scholarship to Cedar Falls Teachers college.

Leut. Lloyd Haefs Now Reported as Prisoner of War
A telegram was received here Thursday by Mrs. Mary Haefs, 2707 Dodge Avenue, that her husband, First Lieut. Lloyd O. Haefs, bombardier with the United States air corps in engagement over Greece, is a prisoner of the German government. The telegram was received from the war department. It conveyed the information that the young man had been wounded.
First Lieut. Haefs in January was reported once as missing in action and at another time as killed in action. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Haefs, 1825 W. Horne Street. He is a graduate of Central High School and was active in track events.

Lloyd Oliver Haefs was born Feb. 17, 1921 to Walter Charles and Gladys Larsen Haefs. He died May 22, 2008.
Lloyd was awarded the Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, EAME Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
