Pfc. Jack D. Garthright

 

 

Former Employee of Armour & Co. Hurt in Tarawa Battle

Convalescing in a base hospital somewhere in the South Pacific, is Private First Class Jack D. Garthright of the marine corps, who was wounded in action in the Tarawa sector on the Gilbert Island, according to a letter received by his mother, Mrs. Beryl Garthright, 312 W. 14th Street, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Prior to his enlistment, he lived with his mother at 3013 Marshall Avenue in Sioux City and worked for Armour & Co. He enlisted May 15, 1942, and has been on overseas duty since October 1942.

Private Garthright was wounded by Japanese machinegun fire and received pieces of shrapnel in the left hand, chest and the right ankle, during the battle of Tarawa. He will be awarded the purple heart for his part in this action, his mother has been informed.
