Moville Corporal Awarded Star for Meritorious Service
Moville, Iowa – Special: Corporal Eugene A. Funk has been awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in direct support for combat operations at Bougainville, in the Solomon Islands, March 24, 1944. While hostile shells were falling in the vicinity, Corporal Funk restored communication disrupted by enemy artillery, contributing to the success of counter-battery fire dependent on communications.
Corporal Funk is one of three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Funk, all of whom are in the service. Before entering the service he helped his father in operating Adam’s Café here. He was inducted into the army in October, 1941, and has been overseas 28 months with the artillery unit of the Americal division. The Americal division is commanded by Maj. Gen. Robert B. McClure of Palo Alto, California.
Corporal Funk’s wife and little daughter, Karen, are making their home in Carnarvon for the duration, near her parents.
The other Funk boys are Private First Class Mark Funk, with the reconnaissance in Italy and Private First Class Winfred Gregory Funk, with the army air corps in the southwest Pacific.
