Cpl. Anthony A. Ericksen

Silver Star Medal

IN UNIFORM

Cpl. Anthony A. Ericksen recently was awarded the silver star medal for gallantry in action with the 45th division, France. Cpl. Ericksen was a medic with the 179th infantry during the fighting on the Anzio beachhead, Italy. When an American artillery observation plane crashed and caught fire, the enemy fired a heavy concentration of artillery in the area to prevent the rescue of the pilot. Entering the area, Cpl. Ericksen ran to the burning plane and extricated the pilot from the wreckage. After applying first aid measures, Cpl. Ericksen supervised the evacuation of the wounded pilot. The 45th division has been through 511 days of actual combat, starting with the invasion of Sicily and ending with the capture of Munich, Germany. It has been at the assembly area command, Camp St. Louis, awaiting shipment to the United States.
