Mrs. Leonard Engelby, who lives in Boone while her husband is in service, was here Tuesday night to inform her husband’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Engelby, that she has received notice from the war Department that her husband, Sgt. Leonard Engelby of Jewell, is missing in action in Italy since October 10th. Other word that has been received here, although not confirmed, is that Leonard is a prisoner of war of the Germans.

IS PRISONER
Sgt. Leonard Engelby of Jewell is now a prisoner of war in Germany, according to word received by his wife who resides at Boone. Sergeant Engelby was first reported missing in action in Italy, Oct. 10, but a war department message has just listed him as a nazi captive based on reports received through the International Red Cross.

HIS LUCKY DAY
NEW YORK CITY—(AP)—Staff Sgt. Leonard Engelby, 34, of Jewell, Iowa, a prisoner of war who returned from Italy on the troopship Jackson, says April 28, was his lucky day. He received the first letter he had had from his wife since his imprisonment last Occ. 10, that day, and only five hours later was liberated.

Leonard Engelby was born Dec. 5, 1910 to John and Jennie Kringlen Engelby. He died July 15, 1963 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Jewell, IA.
Sgt. Engelby served with Co. A 105 Inf Tng Bn. He was reported missing in action in Italy Oct. 18, 1945 and became a prisoner of war in Germany.

Jewell Man Dies At Des Moines
JEWELL — Leonard Engelby, 52, died Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines here he had been a patient for a week.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran church in Jewell. Rev. Norbert Jolivette will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Engelby, son of John and Jennie Engelby, was born Dec. 8, 1910 at Jewell. He was married on Oct. 14, 1940, to Erma Blaess, who survives him, also two children, Leon and Cheryl Ann; three brothers, Embert of Frost, Minn., Jalmer of Kansas City, Mo., and Joe of Stratford; four sisters, Mrs. Alta Coleman of Chugiak, Alaska; Hazel Engelby of Livermore, Calif., Mrs. Roy Rasmussen of Fort Dodge and Arlene Engelby of Chicago.
Mr Engelby was in the produce business in Jewell for 27 years. He was a member of the American Legion and Bethesda Lutheran church. During his three years of service in World War II he was a prisoner of war for seven months, and was discharged Oct. 17, 1945. Military rites will be held at the grave.
