John Elmer Elm was born Aug. 27, 1917 to Oscar and Mamie Oline Severson Elm. He died Aug. 10, 1994 and is buried in the Washington Lutheran Cemetery, Duncombe, IA.
Pvt. Elm served with the U.S. Army in World War II with the 186th Combat Engineers in the Pacific Theatre.
Obituary:
John Elm, 76, Webster City, died Aug. 10, 1994 at the Hamilton County Public Hospital following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roy Miltner officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Lutheran Cemetery south of Duncombe. Graveside military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 191. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral Home until 8 a.m. Saturday when the casket will be taken to the church.
John Elmer Elm, son of Oscar and Mamie (Severson) Elm, was born Aug. 27, 1917 on a farm south of Duncombe. He attended Mud Hollow Rural School and Webster City High School. From 1943 until 1946, he served in the U.S. Army with the 186th Combat Engineers in the Pacific Theatre.
He married Mildred Mulnix Gorman Jan. 31, 1948, in Des Moines. He had farmed in the Webster City, Duncombe, Blairsburg, Williams and Kamrar areas. The couple retired to Webster City in November 1982.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son Jerry Elm of Cedar Rapids; step-sons Jerry Gorman of Belton, Mo. and Don Gorman of Webster City; three grandchildren and seven great-step-grandchildren; brothers LuVerne Elm and Estel Elm of Webster City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Jackie in 1936 and his parents.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 191.
