Vet Dies In Mishap At Jewell
Harold Eittreim, Jr., 24-year old discharged navy veteran of Jewell, was killed early Sunday morning near Jewell when the auto he was driving skidded on ice and drove off a dead end road, Sheriff E. R. Lear reported Monday.
Sheriff Lear stated that the Jewell veteran suffered a broken neck in the accident which occurred about 1:30 a.m. two miles south and one mile east of Jewell.
Six Years’ Service
Eittreim, son of H.D. Eittreim, of Jewell had just been released after six years of naval duty. He is the first traffic fatality in Hamilton county in 1946.
The accident was discovered by two friends of the ex-sailor who were in a car following him, the sheriff stated. The veteran evidently had tried to put on his brakes as he neared the dead end corner but the icy condition of the roads made that impossible and the auto dove into the bank at the end of the highway. The front end of the auto was badly wrecked.
Call Officials
Sheriff E. R. Lear and County Coroner M. B. Galloway were called shortly after the accident was discovered. The body was taken to the Terhune funeral home at Jewell.
Funeral services will be held at the Terhune funeral home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the minister of Bethesda Lutheran Church officiating.
Survived by his father only, Harold Eittreim, Jr., was preceded in death by his mother who died at his birth.
