Laurel William Ebert was born Nov. 24, 1914 to Eldo Henry and Laura Maria Martha Schultz Ebert. He died Nov. 26, 1942 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown, IA.There is also a memorial stone for Pvt. Ebert near the Civil War Monument in that cemetery. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery with a designation that his body has been recovered.
Pvt. Ebert served in World War II with the U.S. Army 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. He was part of a nine-person patrol to find and silence an enemy machine gun position somewhere near Papua, New Guinea. Six members of that patrol, including Ebert, failed to return following the mission and he was listed as MIA. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantryman Badge and Honorable Service Lapel Button—World War II.
Pvt. Ebert’s remains were accounted for July 1, 2019 by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
