James Elwin Conklin was born Apr. 15, 1921 to William Ernest and Elizabeth May ‘Lizzie’ Richey Conklin. He died Apr. 19, 1990 and is buried in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR.
Chief Engineer Conklin served with the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the U.S. Kilawea, USS Mount Baker, USS Sea Dragon, Sub. Div. 282, and USS Queen Fish.

James E. Conklin, 69, died April 19 in Vancouver, Wash. Funeral services were held April 24 at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver. Burial was at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Conklin was born April 15, 1921, in Dayton, and graduated from Stratford High School in 1939. He had resided in Vancouver for 20 years. He was an engineer for Tidewater Barge Lines in Vancouver for over 20 years. He was a Navy Chief Engineer serving from 1940, until retiring in 1941 in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. He married Donna R. Conklin in Vancouver in 1972. She preceded him in death on March 30, 1990.
He is survived by two sisters, Ella M. Jones, Lehigh, and Lois D. Peterson, Stratford; a brother, Robert Conklin, Webster City; and several nieces and nephews, all in Iowa; and two friends, Mary Smith and Glenda Fagaly, both of Vancouver.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lizzie Conklin and a brother, Orville.
Mr. Conklin was a member of the Inland Boatman’s Union and the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union.
