Jack Combs, 92, of rural Westfield, Iowa passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at his home near Westfield surrounded by his family.
Private family services will be held at a later date. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
Jack Cooper Combs was born March 12, 1922, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Harry Lloyd and Grace Myrtle (Cooper) Combs. He was raised in Sioux City and attended Sioux City Community Schools. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City.
He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. While in basic training in San Antonio, Texas, he met his future wife, Bobbie Knight. After basic training, they moved to Sioux City. They were united in marriage on February 22, 1944.
Shortly after their marriage, Jack went overseas during WWII. He was stationed in France. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Sioux City. Jack went to work for Northwestern Bell in Sioux City. In November of 1962, they moved to a farm in Plymouth County, Iowa. He continued to work for the phone company until retiring in 1983. His wife passed away on December 14, 2012.
Jack was a member of Morningside Church of Christ in Sioux City. Through the years, he enjoyed listening to opera music, needle point, and flower gardening. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include a son: Gary (Deb) Combs of rural Westfield, IA; two daughters: Sandra (Jim) Vint of Sioux City, IA, and Susan (Bob) Goodburn of Marcus, IA; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bobbie Combs; his brother: Bill Combs; a granddaughter: Courtney Goodburn; a grandson: Caleb Goodburn; and two great granddaughters: Kenzie Combs and Catherine Lafferty.
Memorials can be made in Jack’s name to Hospice of Siouxland.
