Herbert Ross “Ross” Chickering was born Aug. 23, 1917 to Herbert J. and Maude Jennie Goltry Chickering. He died May 6, 1945 and is buried in Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England.
Lt. Chickering served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, 313th Squadron, 349th Troop Carrier Group. He died when his plane crashed into a radar tower at Gibbets Hill, Hazlemere, England in inclement weather. He was on a mission involving the transfer of American litter patients, men who had been injured in the service of their country. He had transported numerous other sick and wounded soldiers aiding them to rapid recovery.
