Morningside’s Coach Resigns
Stafford Cassell Leaves Friday to Enter Navy Service

Again Morningside College is without an athletic director.
For on New Year’s Day Stafford H. Cassel will depart for Washington, as he has been appointed a lieutenant (j.g.) in the United States naval reserve.
After two days in the nation’s capital, Mr. Cassell will go to the officer’s training school at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Following a month’s instruction and the necessary in indoctrinal course, he will become a physical educational instructor for Uncle Sam.
Cassell was appointed athletic director of Morningside College in March of this year, succeeding J.M. Saunderson, who served at the local college as athletic director and coach for 30 years. The brief time Coach Cassell has been in Sioux City he has made a host of friends, and gave every indication that he would have made an enviable record for himself and athletic teams within another year.
“Staff” as he is better known to the student body, believing that he owed his services to his country, began about six weeks ago to seek application as a physical instructor in the navy.
He was informed of his appointment by telephone from Chicago Wednesday night. In announcing his appointment, Cassell said, “I am, indeed, very happy that the navy considered me worthy of service. Certainly it is a great feeling to start the New Year in the service of Uncle Sam. “I’ll do my best.”
