... And a Dubuque sailor was listed as missing aboard a submarine unheard of since June 6 of this year.
Missing on Lost Sub
James R. Carney, 20, signalman 3-c, a son of Mr. And Mrs. R.E. Carney, 2805 Jackson street, was revealed Tuesday as a member of the submarine crew of the U.S.S. Gudgeon, which the navy department recently reported lost as of June 6.
Carney enlisted in the navy in July, 1942, and received his training at the Great Lakes and the submarine base at New London, Conn. He had been somewhere in the south Pacific area since May, 1943.
Carney, a graduate of Holy Ghost school and Senior high, with the class of 1942, was active in track and CYO and Golden Gloves boxing here. He has three brothers in the service, Pfc. Leo, army air corps, Long Island, N.Y.; Clarence, in Hawaii, and Fireman 2-c Kenneth, in the south Pacific.

James Ralph Carney was born Feb. 23, 1924 to Ross and Clara F. Waltz Carney. He died Apr. 18, 1944 (at sea) and has a cenotaph in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, IA. He is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Petty Officer Carney served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Gudgeon (SS-567) and died in the sinking of that vessel off Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
