William Russel Burkett was born Feb. 18, 1916 to James L. and Anna Pearl Schipper Burkett. He died Mar. 4, 1944 and is buried in Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium and has a cenotaph in Junction Township Cemetery, Grand Junction, IA.
1st Lt. Burkett served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 351st Fighter Squadron, 353rd Fighter Group and was KIA in Liege, Belgium. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters.
