Sgt. Raymond J. Benton

Raymond J. Benton was born Jan. 27, 1918 to Samuel and Eva Stephenson Benton. He died Feb. 3, 1945 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England and at Exira Cemetery, Exira, IA.

Sgt. Benton served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 366th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomber Group, Heavy and was MIA/KIA on a B-17 that ditched in the North Sea, having sustained major flak damage during a bombing mission over Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
