Richard McGrew Bates was born to Gilbert M. and Ethel M. McGrew Bates. He died Nov. 3, 1944 and is buried in Fort William McKinley, Manila, the Philippines.
Lt. Bates served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group. He was MIA/FOD/KIA in Leyte, Philippine Islands and awarded the Purple Heart.
