Petty Officer Bernard served with the U.S. Navy in World War II in the South Pacific aboard the USS Tern and USS Pensacola.

Emerson Le Vay Bernard died Nov. 7, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines after a lengthy illness.
Emerson (Barney) Bernard was born Nov. 7, 1921, at Woolstock to Arthur and Myrtle (Nickles) Bernard. He graduated from high school at Woolstock. He served in the Navy in World War II in the South Pacific aboard the USS Tern and USS Pensacola.
He retired from Woodford Manufacturing. Emerson served as a trustee and usher at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was also an avid baseball fan.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Belva Frances (Myers) Bernard; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susan, William and Margaret, and Alan and Carly; three granddaughters and four grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Berniece Summers and niece, Marsha Summers.
Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines, with burial at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City.
