MARINE WINS PURPLE HEART

Plt. Sgt. Forrest D. Bailey Was Wounded at Tarawa.


Platoon Sgt. Forrest D. Bailey, husband of the former Margaret Adams of this city, has been awarded the Purple Heart medal, according to word received here by his wife.

Sergeant Bailey was wounded in the head and arm during the epic marine battle in which Tarawa was wrested from the Japanese.

Bailey enlisted in the marines on April 28, 1942, and has been overseas for the past 11 months.

He is now stationed somewhere in the south Pacific and was located in New Caledonia and New Zealand.

PLT. SGT. BAILEY WOUNDED AGAIN ON SAIPAN ISLE

Plt. Sgt. Forrest D. Bailey, husband of Mrs. Margaret Bailey of this city, has been wounded in the bloody fighting at Saipan and has been placed aboard a hospital ship for transport to an undesignated hospital according to a letter received by Mrs. Bailey from her husband.

Sergeant Bailey, who was also wounded in the bitter assault on Tarawa, wrote his wife that he had been hit in the hip and had been placed in a cast for transfer to a hospital.

The letter was the first news Mrs. Bailey had received from her husband in two months.

The sergeant, whose home was in Fort Dodge before entering service, is the holder of the Purple Heart medal for the wounds suffered at Tarawa.

Plt. Sgt. and Mrs. Forrest Bailey are spending a 30-day furlough with relatives here and in Fort Dodge. The sergeant has been located at Great Lakes, Ill., and Mrs. Bailey has been there with him.

Forrest Dale Bailey was born June 14, 1919 to Charles Lemuel and Gladys L. Burington Bailey. He died Feb. 12, 1977 and is buried in North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge, IA.
