Message Is Received by Wife

Clear Lake - Mrs. Raymond L. Voss, who is making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Mitchell, on a farm north of Clear Lake, has received the following telegram from the war department:
"The secretary of war desires me to express his deep regret that your husband, Pfc. Raymond L. Voss, was killed in action in Italy Oct. 6. Letter follows. J. A. Ulio, the adjutant general."
Pfc. Voss entered the service May 23, 1942, and took infantry training at Camp Shelby, Miss., leaving for overseas duty in December, 1943. He landed in Africa and from there went to Italy where, as a member of the 85th division with the 5th army, he first engaged in combat last May 28. About 2 months ago he received the infantry combat badge. His last letter was received Sept. 16.
Pfc. Voss was born in Saybrook county, Ill., Nov. 2, 1912. Before entering the service he was employed at the brick and tile yards in Mason City. Dec. 10, 1942, he was married to Miss Esther Mitchell of Clear Lake and to them was born a daughter, Jerrilea, now 8 months old.
Besides his wife and daughter, Pfc. Voss is survived by his father, Henry Voss, and 4 brothers, Herman, Frank, George and Albert, all living in the vicinity of Aredale, and a sister, Mrs. Mabel McConnell, Pipestone, Minn. His mother is dead and the father lives with Herman.

Death of Pfc. Voss Confirmed by Letter
Clear Lake - Mrs. Raymond L. Voss, who received a telegram from the war department Oct. 25 stating that her husband, Pfc. Raymond L. Voss, had been killed in action in Italy Oct. 6, has since had a letter from J A. Ulio, the adjutant general, confirming the report sent by wire. The letter stated that, for reasons of safety, nothing further could be said at this time.

AWARDED PURPLE HEART
Mrs. Raymond L. Voss, Clear Lake, has received a letter from Henry L. Stimson, secretary of war, stating that her husband, Pfc. Voss, has been awarded the Purple Heart posthumously for military merit and for wounds received in action Oct. 6, 1944, which resulted in his death. The letter was dated in Washington, D. C., Dec. 21.
Mrs. Voss has also received a memorial certificate from President Franklin D. Roosevelt paying tribute to the memory of her husband who died in the service of his country in north Africa.
Capt. James Ison, in command of Pfc. Voss' regiment, has written to Mrs. Voss confirming the telegram and written notice sent to Mrs. Voss concerning her husband's death. He said that the body was recovered, removing any question as to the authenticity of the report.

Raymond Lawrence Voss was born Nov. 2, 1911 to Henry and Emma Voss. He died Nov. 29, 1944 and is buried in Epinal American Cemetery, Dinoze, France.
Pvt. Voss served in World War II with the U.S. Army 410th Infantry Regiment, 103rd Infantry Division and died in the service of his country. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
