Ben Vermeer Dies In Camp.
Sioux Center: The entire community was shocked early Friday morning when the news came that Pvt. Benjamin Vermeer had passed away very suddenly at the hospital at Camp Hood, Tex., on Thursday evening April 13, 1944, following a heart attack. He left for service about three weeks ago. Pvt. Ben Vermeer is survived by his wife and small son Carl and also his aged mother, Mrs. Gerrit Vermeer, sr. and the following brothers and sisters, Ed Vermeer, Jake Vermeer, Jennie, Mrs. Gerrit Vander Berg and Marie, Mrs. John Den Herder all of Sioux Center; Gerrit Vermeer and Elizabeth, Mrs. Herman Van Eldik, both of Rock Valley; and Priscilla, Mrs. James Hollander of Sioux Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home and at the Central Ref. church with Rev. Meengs and Rev. Brunsting officiating. Music for the service was furnished by the Men's Chorus of which he was also a member and they sang two numbers. The Central Ref. choir sang one number. Burial was made at the local cemetery and acting as pallbearers were James Wandscheer, Dave Roelofs, Dan Voordeman, Joe Wandscheer, Harold Boeyink and Henry Eggink. Pvt. Vermeer was a life long citizen of Sioux Center and was a very active worker in church and community affairs. Previous to his induction into the Army he was employed as bookkeeper at the Mouw garage.
