Francis L. Uhl, gunner’s mate second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Uhl, 1506 Fairview boulevard, has returned to the armed guard center at New Orleans, La., after almost 12 months at sea as a member of the Navy gun crew on a supply merchant ship. Entering the Navy in September, 1942, he has credit for 25 months of sea duty, and has been a member of the crew of ships carrying vital war material to Great Britain, France, Newfoundland and South America. His ship caught a torpedo off the coast of Brazil in 1943, but was brought into port under its own power. Off the Normandy coast, his vessel assisted in shooting down four enemy planes. He is a graduate of Climbing Hill high school.
