City in Brief

Word was received here Tuesday that the body of Pvt. Daniel G. Stevens, former Waterloo resident and employe (sic) of the Rath Packing Co., is being returned to Bassett, Ia., from Los Negros, Admiralty islands, for reburial. Private Stevens was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Stevens of Bassett.

D. G. Stevens Rites Slated

Funeral services for Pfc. Daniel G. Stevens, 19, former Waterloo resident, will be Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Larkin funeral home, New Hampton, Ia.

Private First Class Stevens drowned Sept. 26, 1944, while serving with the army transportation corps in New Guinea.

The body arrived in New Hampton on Wednesday.

He will be buried alongside his mother in a New Hampton cemetery.

He was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Black Hawk county. He later moved to Ionia, Ia., and then to Waterloo where he attended East Junior high school and Sacred Heart high school.

He was employed by the Rath Packing Co., and was married to Patricia Eastman, Feb. 22, 1942.

He entered the service in May, 1942, received his training in Alabama and Louisiana before going overseas in 1944.

Surviving are his widow, now Mrs. John Lavene, Route 2, La Porte City, Ia., his daughter, Rebecca Lou, his father, D. S. Stevens, Bassett, Ia., a brother, Ronald, and a sister, Mary Lou, all at home.

His mother preceded him in death.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of New Hampton and La Porte City will participate.
