NEWS About MEN AND WOMEN IN SERVICE
C. S. Steele, C. C. S., was a member of the crew of the Roe, that on last Christmas eve, sank a Japanese trawler in the waters off Iwo Jima. One the dame day, this little fighting ship sank an enemy destroyer escort vessel after a chase almost to the home harbor. This delayed news has been revealed since the taking of a Jap-held island by the United States forces. Steele, a chief commissary steward, is the son of Mrs. H. L. Layton, 498 Eighteenth street, Marion. He has been in service since 1927.
