Sgt. Palmer Schuetzle Is Casualty

News that their son, Staff Sgt. Palmer Schuetzle, 22, an army paratrooper, died of wounds received in action Oct. 7 in Holland had been received from the war department Monday by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schuetzle, 110 Block street.

Sergeant Schuetzle, serving overseas for nearly 20 months, entered service Mar. 6, 1942, and trained at Camp Wolters, Tex., and Fort Benning, Ga. He embarked for England in March, 1943, and engaged in the paratroops’ invasions of Sardinia, Sicily, Italy and Holland.

Born Nov. 21, 1921, in Ree Hights, S. D., son of Fred and Ruth Schuetzle, he came to Waterloo with his parents in 1928, attended Hawthorne grade school and was graduated in 1940 from East high school. He was employed at Rath Packing Co. during high school and thereafter until entering service.

He was in the group which captured Ste. Mere Eglise three hours before the main Allied invasion June 6. The mayor of the town asked that the decoration of Fourrageres Francaise be given to them.

Surviving are his parents; one brother, Lothar, a staff sergeant in the paratroops in France; and his grandmother, Mrs. Carrie Schuetzle, in Canada. A stepsister, Olive Schuetzle, preceded him in death in 1940. Sergeant Schuetzle had been engaged to marry Miss Shirley Nass, 1926 Franklin street.

Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p. m. Sunday in Grace Methodist church by Rev. Harley Franham, pastor.

Sgt. Schuetzle served in World War II with the U.S. Army 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He in buried in Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands and was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.
