Sgt. Ted Schoon of George Coming Home from Italy
George, Ia.—Special: Sgt. Ted Schoon of George, one of the first selective service group to join the 135th infantry regiment, 34th “Red Bull” infantry division, veteran Minnesota national guard unit, is returning home on furlough from the Fifth Army front in Italy.
He has served more than 33 months overseas and sailed from the United States to Ireland and England before taking part in the north African invasion where he fought as a mortarman with Company M. He was in action at such major engagements as Fondouk and Hill 609.
In Italy he was at the crossings of the Volturno river, Cassino, the Anzio beachhead, where he was made communications sergeant, Rome, Leghorn, Pisa and the Gothic line. Lately he has been acting first sergeant.
Schoon has been awarded the silver star for gallantry in action at Mount Pantano, scene of some of the bitterest fighting in the history of the regiment. He also has been awarded the combat infantryman badge and wears three campaign stars on his European theater ribbon.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Juren Schoon, live in George, Iowa.
