Scharfenberg Body Home Wednesday
The body of Cpl. Halbert Scharfenberg, 24, of Waterloo, will arrive Wednesday at 5:10 p. m. via the Illinois Central railroad and will be taken to Kearns Garden chapel.
Services will be at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at Kearns Garden chapel with Rev. S. M. Becker, pastor of the First Lutheran church, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill cemetery near Gladbrook, Ia.
Corporal Scharfenberg was killed on the banks of the Marseilles river, near Lorraine, France, Sept. 13, 1944.
He was born Feb. 5, 1920, the son of Peter and Albertine Lucht Scarfenberg, on a farm near Waterloo. He attended Barclay township school until moving to Waterloo with his parents in 1926. After graduation from East high school in 1939, he was employed by the Rath Packing Co.
He entered the service in January, 1942, and went overseas in May, 1944. He received his training at Camp Roberts, Cal., Camp Rucker, Ala., and Camp Butner, N. C.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Roland Foggy, 1612 Franklin street, and Miss Dorothy Scharfenberg, also of 1612 Franklin street.
His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

Memorial Service for Scharfenberg
Being Held Today
Memorial services for Cpl. Halbert D. Scharfenburg will be at 2:30 p. m. today in First Lutheran church with Rev. H. H. Diers, pastor, officiating.
Corporal Scharfenberg was killed in action Sept. 18 in France where he was serving with the headquarters infantry battalion.
The church junior choir will sing “The Holy City” and members of the American Legion post here will present the colors and sound “Taps.”
Corporal Scharfenberg was the brother of Mrs. Roland Foggy and Miss Dorothy Schrfenberg, 1612 Franklin street.
