Lt. Donald Schamp Gets
Bronze Star Medal in Italy
WITH THE FIFTH ARMY, Italy – First Lt. Donald R. Schamp of Independence, Ia., recently was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action on the Fifth army front in Italy near Arno river last summer.
A battalion adjutant with the 19th Combat Engineer Regiment, Schamp was decorated by Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Keyes, II corps commander. According to the citation, Schamp, a platoon leader at the time, voluntarily cleared mines from a road under heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire that other engineers had abandoned the task. His action made possible speedy establishment of communications.
Schamp, overseas almost two years, participated in the Sicilian campaign and fought before Cassino. His father, Richard L. Schamp, lives in Independence.
