Cedar Falls – (Special) – Mrs. George Alvin Saul, 805 Main street, received word Tuesday from her husband somewhere in Germany that he has been advanced from private first class to staff sergeant. He has also been recommended for a combat expert infantryman badge.

George Saul Receives Bronze Star
Staff Sgt. George A. Saul, Waterloo, recently was awarded the Bronze star medal for “heroic achievement’ in connection with military operations in Germany on Nov. 24, 1944, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Saul, 210 Western avenue.
The citation accompanying the award stated, “On the afternoon of Nov. 24 the company to which Sergeant Saul (then private first class) was assigned, attacked a town across 300 yards of open, fire-swept terrain. After advancing 250 yards, the leading platoon encountered severe machine gun fire and suffered many casualties.
“The enemy then placed an intense mortar barrage on the pinned down platoon. When the order to withdraw was given, Sergeant Saul, learning that all commissioned and non-commissioned officers had became casualties, crawled forward and calmly directed the movement of the men to the rear.
“Upon reaching the assembly area Sergeant Saul returned across the fire-swept terrain at great risk to his life, contacted the automatic rifle squad, and directed their fire on the apertures of the bunker from which the enemy was pouring fire on the men remaining in the area.
“He then contacted the members of the remaining squads, moved them to positions in the rear, and directed the displacement of their guns to cover the withdrawal of the automatic rifle squad to the rear.
“By placing a constant hail of fire upon the enemy positions and alternately withdrawing the two groups, he succeeded in removing the leaderless men from the area without further casualties,” the citation concluded.

GEORGE A. SAUL
Funeral services for Staff Sergeant George Alvin Saul, son of Mrs. H. H. Saul, 210 Western avenue, will be conducted Friday at 3 p. m. at O’Keefe & Towne funeral home by Rev. Sargeant Lusthoff, pastor of Washburn Community church. Sergeant Saul was killed in action while serving with the First army in Germany Apr. 23, 1945. There will be military rites at graveside in Elmwood cemetery.

Plan Rites for Reburial of Sgt. Saul
Tentative services for the reburial of Staff Sgt. George Alvin Saul have been set for Friday.
The body is scheduled to arrive by train at 5:15 p. m. Wednesday and will be taken to the O’Keefe & Towne funeral home.
Sgt. Saul was killed in action in Germany Apr. 23, 1945, while serving with the First army there. He received the bronze star for gallantry before he died.
The remains have beenshipped from a United States army cemetery in Holland.
Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. H. H. Saul, 210 Western avenue, three brothers and a stepbrother, four sisters, a daughter and his wife, who has remarried.
