Waterloo GI Dies Abroad
Pfc. Herbert Rowland, 32, whose wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Beverly, 12, live at 1010 ½ South street, died in Munich, Germany, on Nov. 4. Mrs. Rowland was notified by the army Monday night. No details of his death were given.
A brakeman for the Waterloo, Cedar Falls & Northern railroad before entering service on Feb. 29, 1944, Rowland was serving as a teletype operator with co. C, 746th railroad operating battalion of the army of occupation.
He had been overseas 10 months.
He was born at St. Ansgar, Ia., Feb. 12, 1913. He attended school at Otranto, Ia., graduating from the high school there. He came to Waterloo in August of 1937, and went to work for the W. C.F. & N. railroad on Oct. 16, 1937.
Surviving beside his wife and daughter in Waterloo are his mother, Mrs. Kate Rowland, and a brother, William, both of Osage.

Herbert Rowland Dies in Germany
Pfc. Herbert Rowland, 33, died Nov. 4 in Munich, Germany of cellulitis, a neck infection, his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Rowland, 1010 ½ South street, was informed Saturday, by the war department.
Born Feb. 12, 1913, at St. Ansgar, Ia., he came to Waterloo in August, 1937, where he was employed as a brakeman for the Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern railroad. He was married to Dorothy Bradwell in February, 1932.
Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Beverly Jean, 12, his mother, Mrs. Catherine (sic) Rowland, Osage, Ia., and a brother, William, Osage, Ia.
He entered service Feb. 29, 1944, and served as a teletype operator. He had been overseas 10 months in the European theater.

Herbert Rowland Memorial Rites
at St. Ansgar Sunday
St. Ansgar, Ia. – Memorial services for Pfc. Herbert Warren Rowland, 33, who died Nov. 4, 1945, in a military hospital at Munich, Germany of a throat infection, will be at 3 p. m. Sunday in the Methodist church here, Rev. H. F. Risse officiating.
Vocal numbers will be by Clare Moe and Mary Thacher.
Presentation of a gold star plaque and a United States flag will be by Walker T. Enneberg post of the American Legion.
Deceased was born at St. Ansgar Feb. 12, 1913, son of Herbert W. and Katherine (Lang) Rowland. He was an active 4-H club member and built up a herd of Guernsey cattle upon which he won many honors. He was champion showman at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress one year.
He married Dorothy Bradwell in 1932. Mr. Rowland moved to Waterloo in 1937 and was employed by the W. C. F. & N. until his induction Mar. 16, 1944.
Arriving overseas he spent several weeks in England and then went to Le Havre, France, where his outfit was assigned to operating the railroads for a time in France and Germany. After moving into Munich he was a teletype operator with [a] headquarters company.
Mr. Rowland was a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are his widow, Dorothy; a daughter, Beverly Jean, Waterloo; his mother, Mrs. Katherine Rowland; and a brother, William, Osage; and his grandmother, Mrs. Cora lang, St. Ansgar.
Private Rowland is buried in the military cemetery at Spabold, France, nine miles from Metz, Germany.

Rowland Memorial Rites at St. Ansgar
Memorial services for Herbert W. Rowland, whose widow resides at 1010 ½ South street, will be Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in St. Ansgar, Ia.
Rowland died Nov. 4, 1945, in Munich, Germany, while in service with the army.
Leaving Sunday morning to attend the services will be the widow; their daughter, Beverly Jean, 13; Mr. and Mrs. Warner Lang; Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Lang; Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Lang; and Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Lang. The Langs are uncles of Rowland.
Also attending will be his mother, Mrs. Katherine Rowland, of Osage.
The service will be conducted by a lay minister, Harvey Risse, formerly superintendent of schools at St. Ansgar.

Herbert Warren Rowland, Jr. was born Feb. 12, 1913 to Herbert W. (Sr.) and Kate Lang Rowland. He died Nov. 4, 1945 and is buried in Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint Avold, France.
Pvt. Rowland served in World War II with the U.S. Army.
