Mac Reed Loses Life in Germany
Pvt. Mac Reed, 18, outstanding athlete of East Waterloo high school who graduated only last June, son of Maj. And Mrs. Harry M. Reed, 242 Prospect avenue, was reported killed in action in Germany Feb. 18, according to a wire from the war department received by his parents yesterday.
A five-letterman in East high school athletics, Private Reed won Trojan letters in football, basketball and baseball, was on the school debate squad, active in dramatics, on the Orange and Back newspaper staff and student council. He was in the upper 10 per cent of his class scholastically.
Born Harry McKinley Reed May 18, 1926, son of Elizabeth and Harry Reed in Waterloo, he attended Waterloo schools and entered the arm in August, 1944.
He trained in infantry replacement in Camp Blanding, Fla., and landed in France Jan. 13, 1945. He was believed near Saarbruehen, Germany.
His father, a major in combat intelligence in the army air forces returned to Waterloo in February this year after being transferred to inactive status following two and one-half years in service at Washington, D. C. He has returned to his law practice.
Surviving are his parents, one brother, Wallace, 15, a student at East high, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. S. B. Reed, 309 Independence avenue, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. James E. Black, 260 Prospect avenue.

Harry McKinley “Mac” Reed, Jr. was born May 27, 1926 to Harry M. (Sr.) and Elizabeth Black Reed. He died Feb. 18, 1945 and is buried in Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Dinoze, France. Pvt. Reed served in World War II with the U.S. Army 276th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, 70th Infantry Division. He was KIA and awarded the Purple Heart.
