Local Men Will Return to States
Three Council Bluffs soldiers serving with the 34th division, are returning home on furlough from the 5th army front in Italy. They are Cpl. Claude L. Pleas, Cpl. George D. Bolton, and Pvt. Chares W. Jackson, all members of the 168th infantry.
They have seen action with their units since D-day at Algiers and have participated in such illustrious battles as Fiad Pass, Hill 809 in Africa; and the crossings of the Volturno river, Mount Pantano, and the drive up “Purple Heart valley” to Mont Cassino, in Italy. From there they moved to the Anzio beachhead, and past Rome to the Arno river.
Pleas and Jackson were with a regimental service company and helped supply the men with necessary food, water, and supplies throughout these encounters. They often were subjected to enemy artillery fire and bombings.
Bolton was a member of the headquarters group of a battalion of the 168th. His mother, Mrs. Gladys Bolton, resides at 2427 Avenue G.
Pleas’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Please, reside at 2533 Fourth avenue.
Jackson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jackson, live at 1805 South Eleventh street.
