Awarded Purple Heart
Cpl. Robert Murphy, 25, has written his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Murphy, 803 Marsh street, that he has been presented the Purple Heart for wounds suffered Aug. 4 in France. Corporal Murphy, whose wife resides in Minneapolis, Minn., is now back on active duty in Germany as a communications technician. Since going overseas 25 months ago, he has participated in the invasions of north Africa, Sicily and Normandy.

Two Waterloo Men Killed
in Action; Another Missing
Two former Waterloo men, Cpl. Robert Murphy, 25, and Second Lt. Dewey H. Hollis, 21, are reported by the war department as killed in action, and a third Waterloo man, Cpl. James F. Fisher, 20, is reported as missing in action in Germany, war department messages advised relatives here Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. George A. Murphy, Sr., 803 Marsh street, Monday had been informed that their son, Corporal Murphy, was killed in action Christmas day in Germany while serving with headquarters company of a communications unit.
Corporal Murphy, whose wife, Elsie, resided in Minneapolis, Minn., has been overseas 26 months. He is a veteran of the invasions of north Africa, Sicily and Normandy, and was awarded the Purple Heart recently for wounds suffered Aug. 4, in France.
Born Aug. 21, 1919, in Carrington, N. Dak., he moved with his parents to Minneapolis, Minn., in 1928, and later to Fargo, N. Dak., where he graduated from high school and attended North Dakota Agricultural college for two and a half years. At the time he entered service in May, 1942, he was employed in Minneapolis.
Corporal Murphy trained at Camp Wolters, Tex., and Ft. Bragg, N. C. before going overseas in November, 1942.
His brother, Cpl. George A. Murphy, Jr., is serving in the European theater of war.
