MISSING SAILOR PRESUMED DEAD
James Allen Mitchell “Lost” November 29, 1943
Relatives of James Allen Mitchell, 22, shipfitter first class, United States Navy, have been informed by the Navy department that his presumed death occurred November 30, 1944, a day following the expiration of 12 months since he was in the missing status.
Mitchell was missing as of November 29, 1943, when he was lost from the U.S.S. Case during a heavy storm in the Pacific ocean. He was last seen around 2 p.m. on November 29 and his disappearance was not realized until he failed to appear for muster on the morning of November 30.
Survivors include his father, R. C. Mitchell, 4335 Van Buren street; a brother, S. Sgt. Howard E. Mitchell, an instructor at Fort Sill, Okla., and a sister, Mrs. Melvin Wilson of Portland, Ore.
Shipfitter First Class Mitchell, native Sioux Cityan, attended Woodrow Wilson junior school and Central high school. He enlisted in the Navy before the war and was at Pearl Harbor when the Japs made their first attack, December 7, 1941. Since that time he fought the enemy in almost every part of the Pacific, including Guadalcanal and Midway, the New Georgia campaign and the Aleutians.
