Takes Part In 7 Major Battles
Melvin A. Miller, radar man second class, veteran of seven major operations in the south Pacific is spending a 20-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert T. Miller, 2515 Center Street, while his ship is being repaired. He will report December 19, at Seattle, Washington, for further orders.
Mr. Miller, who wears campaign bars representing the Asiatic, Pacific and American theaters of war, was land based at Tarawa for eight months. Later he participated in engagements at Saipan, Guam, Palau, two Philippine Island, Formosa and the Bohans. He brought Japanese shells and a diary from Tarawa.
Enlisting in the navy in May 1943, Mr. Miller was sent over-seas the following September. He attended Central High School and is a former Journal carrier.

IN UNIFORM
George D. Yocum, bugler first class, a crew member on the St. Lo, an aircraft carrier which was sunk in the battle of the Philippines October 25, has departed for the west coast for reassignment after spending a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Yocum, 3019 Summit street. He wears four battle stars on his campaign ribbon. Another Sioux Cityan, Melvin Miller, radar man second class, also was a crew member of the St. Lo. Both were graduated from Central high school in 1943.
