HUSBAND OF ALGONA GIRL IS DECORATED
Ray John McKenna, chief torpedoman’s mate with the Navy, was recently awarded the gold star in lieu of a second Navy and Marine Corps Medal, presented by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Jr., commander in chief of the Pacific fleet. McKenna’s citation said McKenna’s leadership, skill and diligence made him in large part responsible for the outstanding torpedo performance of his ship.
McKenna’s picture was recently published in the Des Moines Tribune telling of the citation and it is through their courtesy that we have the cut.
Mr. McKenna is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed McKenna of Hardy, Iowa, but is well known in the St. Benedict neighborhood where he was employed prior to joining the Navy a few years before Pearl Harbor. His wife, the former Mary Ann Arndorfer, is employed in the Chrischilles store here.
