Lieut. William Maloney
Is “Missing In Action”
Mrs. William F. Maloney received a telegram Monday from the War Department conveying the sad information that her son, Lieut. William Richard Maloney was missing in action July 22 in the Alaskan area. No further details have been received.
Lieut. Maloney, aged 35, was born and raised in Adams county, was graduated from the Corning high school in 1932. The last several years he has resided in Chicago and enlisted in the air corps from that city last November.
Mr. and Mrs. Thos. F. Moran, Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Pedergast and Dr. T. E. Maloney, all of Chicago, are here with Mrs. Maloney. Mrs. Moran, Mrs. Pendergast and Dr. Maloney are daughters and son of Mrs. Maloney.

Mrs. Wm. Maloney received a message from the government on Monday of this week, advising her that her son, Lt. William Maloney, had been killed in action on the date he had been reported missing, July 22, 1942, and that a letter would follow. Billy was reported missing on that date of last year while on patrol duty as a bombardier off the Aleutian Islands, and no further word had been received until this time.

Given Posthumous Purple Heart Award
Lt. Wm. R. Maloney, son of Mrs. William F. Maloney of Corning, has been posthumously given the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. Lt. Maloney was with a bombing crew in the Alaskan war area when reported missing July 22, 1942. So far as known no further information has ever been learned concerning the missing plane, although indirectly it was reported that the co-pilot of the plane, Lt. Scott Neal, might be a prisoner in Japan.
The award of the Oak Leaf Cluster with the Purple Hears is for succeeding acts of bravery in the service of his country. Lt. Maloney was born and raised to young manhood in this community but later lived in Chicago, from where he entered service November 14, 1941.

William Richard Maloney was born Oct. 18, 1916 to William F. and Gertrude Ryan Maloney. He died July 22, 1942 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii.
2nd Lt. Maloney served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 27th Bomb Squadron, 30th Bomb Group, Heavy. He was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.
