PFC Knowles of New Boston Is Killed in Action

New Boston—Mrs. Jessie Knowles received word Wednesday that her son, Pfc. Acel Knowles of the Army, serving in the infantry, was killed in action in Germany on Nov. 20.

He was called into service on Oct. 19, 1943, and received his training at Rockford, Ill., and Camp Chaffee, Ark., before going overseas.

Surviving are his mother and a sister, Miss Violet Knowles, a teacher in the Keithsburg schools.

—Mrs. Jessie Knowles of New Boston received word on Dec. 6, 1944, that her son, Pfc. Acel Knowles of the Army, serving in the infantry, was killed in action in Germany on Nov. 20, 1944. Pfc. Knowles was called into service on Oct. 19, 1943, and took his training at Rockford, Ill., and Camp Chaffee, Ark., before embarking for overseas.

New Boston Man Killed In Action Mother Advised

New Boston
—Pfc. Acel Knowles, 24, was killed in action in Germany Nov. 20, according to word received from the War Department by his mother, Mrs. Jessie Knowles.

Pfc. Knowles attended the New Boston schools and was employed at the Rock Island arsenal when he entered service Oct. 19, 1943. He received training at Camp Chaffee, Ark., and Fort George G. Meade, Md., before going overseas. He had been a juvenile member of the R. N. A. between the ages of 12 and 16, at which age he became a regular member.

Surviving are his mother and a sister, Miss Violet Knowles, a teacher in the Keithsburg school.

Pfc. Knowles had previously been awarded the Purple Heart medal, which was received by his mother, Nov. 20.

The cost of war runs high!

Word of the victory in Europe today brought a feeling of happiness and relief to thousands of families in the Muscatine area, but for others there were only sad memories.  And for those who have sons, husbands, brothers or other relatives, fighting against the Japs in the second phase of the big world-wide conflagration the period of rejoicing was less pronounced.

Acel W. Knowles was born Mar. 20, 1920 to Harry and Jessie Holman Knowles. He died Nov. 20, 1944 and is buried in New Boston Cemetery, New Boston, IL.
