Memorial Services for Paul Frederick Johann
to Be in Alta Vista
ALTA VISTA – Memorial services for Paul Frederick Johann will be held in the Zion Lutheran church here Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Rev. K. J. Hodum will officiate.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johann received word from the U. S. navy department last week that after [an] extensive search no trace of the body of Paul was found and that the navy has officially recorded him as having been killed in action at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941.
The deceased had been reported missing in action several weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack but no official pronouncement of his death had been made at that time.

NOTE: Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class Paul Frederick Johann was serving aboard the USS Arizona. Alta Vista’s VFW Post 4069 was named in his honor.
Paul Frederick Johann was born Dec. 7, 1919 to Peter and Malinda Joachim Johann. He died Dec. 7, 1941 and is memorialized at the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and has a cenotaph in Union Cemetery, Alta Vista, IA.
