Herbert Jenkins Killed June 28
in Pacific Area
Sgt. Herbert L. Jenkins, former Waterloo resident and Rath Packing Co. employe (sic), was killed in action June 28, 1945, on Mindanao island in the Philippines, while serving as squad leader with the leading platoon of an infantry unit, according to word received here this week.
A buddy of Sergeant Jenkins has written his wife, also a former Waterloo resident now residing at Denison, Ia., the details concerning her husband’s death.
“Our company was advancing along a road through a very thick hemp grove near the town of Lorenzon in Province of Davao,” Capt. David Camack wrote. “We took every precaution, but about noon we were ambushed by two enemy machine guns, which were cunningly concealed by the side of the road.
“Herbert was one of the squad leaders in the leading platoon and he was hit in the head by one of the enemy bullets.”
Born May 1, 1913 in Denison, Ia., the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Jenkins, he married Lillian Schramm Nov. 10, 1934, there. They made their home in Waterloo, where he was employed by the Rath Packing Co. until Sept. 27, 1943, when he entered service.
Surviving are his wife, his father, and one brother, Chester, in service overseas.
