Capt. Elmer F. Iverson, Jr.

 

Capt. Iverson Listed as Dead

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer F. Iverson, 309 Lawton Terrace, have received word from the adjutant general of the death of their son, Capt. Elmer F. Iverson, jr., 25, in a routine flight from Tacloban, Leyte island to Clark field, Luzon, during a flight Nov. 20, 1945.

Capt. Iverson, previously had been reported missing in action.

A graduate of Clinton high school in the class of 1936, he had moved to Council Bluffs with his parents. He spent two years at Iowa State college [present-day Iowa State University, Ames] before entering the service.

He enlisted in the air cadet corps Jan. 15, 1942 and was commissioned a second lieutenant Aug. 22, 1942. He was sent overseas in July, 1943, and later was promoted to first to first lieutenant and later to captain in the army air forces. His service was with the air transport command where he carried airborn (sic) troops and paratroopers. Although he was an army pilot, he had used the navy PBY plane on several occasions.

Besides his parents, Capt. Iverson is survived by two sisters, Barbara Jean Iverson at home, and Mrs. Phyllis Bailey of Council Bluffs.

Elmer F. Iverson, Jr. was born July 30, 1920 to Elmer F. (Sr.) and Helen Iverson. He died Nov. 20, 1945 and is buried in Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Capt. Iverson served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 374th Squadron, 13th Air Depot Group and was MIA/KIA on Luzon Island.
