Second Lt. Dewey H. Hollis, pilot of a fighter plane, has returned to Ft. Meyers, Fla., after spending a nine-day leave with his wife and mother, Mrs. A. Hollis, both of Route 2, Waterloo.

Two Waterloo Men Killed
in Action; Another Missing
Two former Waterloo men, Cpl. Robert Murphy, 25, and Second Lt. Dewey H. Hollis, 21, are reported by the war department as killed in action, and a third Waterloo man, Cpl. James F. Fisher, 20, is reported as missing in action in Germany, war department messages advised relatives here Monday.
Death of Lieutenant Hollis in an airplane crash in England was reported to his mother, Mrs. Austin Hollis, 310 Campbell avenue.
Lieutenant Hollis, who had been serving overseas as a pilot with the army air force since October, 1944, entered service Jan. 30, 1943, and received his pre-cadet training at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He received his basic pilot training at Perrin field, Tex., and his wings and his wings and commission at Eagle Pass field, Tex.
Born Feb. 10, 1923, near Hudson, Ia., the son of Austin and Mary Stackhouse Hollis, he came to Waterloo at the age of seven. Here he attended West Waterloo schools and was graduated from West high school. He was employed by the Rath Packing Co. here.
July 3, 1944, he married Ruby Christensen at Ft. Myers, Fla.
He is survived by his mother, his wife, Route 2, Waterloo, one brother, Roy A. Hollis, 310 Campbell avenue, and one sister, Mrs. Earl M. Trask, 507 ½ Sycamore street.
His father preceded him in death in April, 1944.

Posthumous Son Born
to Widow of Killed Flier
A boy whose father, Second Lt. Dewey H. Hollis, 21 was killed in action in an airplane crash in England early this year, was born at Allen Memorial hospital Saturday night [June 30] to Mrs. Hollis of Route 2, Waterloo.
The baby’s father, Lieutenant Hollis, had been serving overseas as a pilot with the army air force.
The child’s mother was formerly Ruby Christensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Holger Christensen. She and Lieutenant Hollis were married last July at Ft. Myers, Fla.
He was the son of Mrs. Mary Hollis, also of Route 2, Waterloo, and the late Austin Hollis.

Lt. Hollis Services Saturday
Funeral services for Lt. Dewey Herbert Hollis, army air forces pilot killed in an airplane crash in England Dec. 13, 1944, will be Saturday at 3 p. m. in Kearns Garden chapel with Rev. William Crossley, pastor of St. Paul’s Methodist church, officiating.
Burial will be at Elmwood cemetery. Military rites at the grave will be by the Waterloo Disabled American veterans.
Survivors include a son, Dewey Herbert Hollis; his mother, Mrs. Mary Hollis, 310 Campbell avenue; a brother, Roy A. Hollis, 310 Campbell avenue; a sister, Mrs. Marian Trask, 507 ½ Sycamore; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Martha Stackhouse, St. Joseph, Mo; and his wife, Mrs. Leroy Degener, who has remarried and lives in Cedar Falls.
Lieutenant Hollis, who was in his 22nd year at the time of his death, was born near Hudson, Ia., Feb. 10, 1923, came to Waterloo with his parents when he was 7 years old, and graduated from West high school in 1941. He entered the service Jan. 30, 1943, and began overseas duty in October, 1944.
